We deliver a training service based around meeting the need to promote the independence of individual users by supporting each person to exercise choice, promote social inclusion, support personal development, encourage healthy lifestyles, be socially enterprising and an active member of the civil society
Potters was founded in early 2012 when a group of local people identified an opportunity to promote community engagement as a third sector organisation to deliver a garden/training centre specifically for people with learning disabilities.
Potters gained charitable status as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation in November 2013. The project is managed in 2 ways, via the Board of Trustees (meeting monthly) which has overall responsibility for the governance of the enterprise and operational management undertaken by appointed and paid staff.
We are funded by Dumfries and Galloway Council, The Robertson Trust, The Holywood Trust and S.W.E.A.T . The site at Stair Park has been transformed into 5 working areas, a productive garden (fruit, veg & flowers), sensory garden, skills and learning area, workshop & wildlife garden. In conjunction with The Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society (RCHS) we deliver the ‘Grow and Learn’ Roots Award and ‘Grow and Learn’ Nurture Award.
Our gardens change on a regular basis. In the summer our gardens always look there best.
The flowers are looking good and fruit and veg are almost ready to harvest. Lockdown has put our work schedule back some months, but, we are hoping 2022 will be a better year.
We are always looking to improve our gardens. This means searching for new varieties of plants.
Our students undertake this task as part of their training. Here a student is looking on the internet for new & replacement plants.
These ornamental figures and play pieces are made by our students.
They are fun items that visitor to site have purchased on a regular basis. We call the Potters Men.
Potters Garden reopened on 17th May 2021 after five-month lockdown.
We operate on site precaution to stop coronavirus (COVID-19) spreading:
